Reading Right Now: February 2023

How has your month of love been? Mine has been productive, though I know I’m entering a season where I will be reading books less as I have a few presentations to work on for April - June. Please head to my Calendar of Events page, as I will add them as they appear. In any case, here are the books I’d like to highlight this month:

1) Try It and See by Megan Aumann. This book was gifted to me by a longtime friend and…she gets me, she really gets me. I read a lot of books on Time Management and this book ranks among my faves. It is a slim read packed with enlightening viewpoints. It is geared more towards creatives, but truly, you can adapt her guidance for any field.

2) Julia Morgan by Victoria Kastner. This is the month’s selection from my online book club, Paging Creatives. It is a biography of Julia Morgan, the first woman admitted to study architecture at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the first licensed to practice architecture in California. Over the first half of the 20th century, she worked on over 700 buildings, the most iconic being Hearst Castle. Being a former decorative painter, I can’t help but marvel at her artistry. Having read Dorothy Draper’s story last year, one can imagine how difficult it must have been to break through as an architect at that time as a woman. I’m reading the bio now - it has started slow (family history) but I anticipate it will pick up exponentially as we hit her career.

3) The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean. This is a novel with an interesting premise. We learn by reading - but what if there were people who learned by eating books? (Plus, the descriptions for how books taste according to content is fantastic.) The conflict arises when one is born with a rare and darker kind of hunger--not for books, but for human minds. I’m so excited for this one!

There are books I read that I don’t share here, but I am happy to feature the ones I think you’ll like. If you are on Goodreads, you can find me there as well. What books are you reading this month? I always love to discover more.
